本片纪录巴拿马运河流域热带雨林的多姿生态,生活于此区域上层树冠的哺乳动物比例很大，如长臂猿、黑猩猩等在树冠与地面间搜寻食物，较大型哺乳动物如象、鹿、狮、豹等以叶子、落果或动物为食。地下穴居动物以蚁类最多，为清除枯落物起很大作用。巴拿马运河区在16平方公里竟发现2万种昆虫，而雨林中鸟类和蝙蝠不仅捕食昆虫，还与茎花传粉、附生植物传播等密切有关。但至今仍有许多动物和植物没有被人认识，更说不上了解其性能和用途。完全可以确认的是，热带雨林是全球生物基因最丰富的宝库，已被利用的仅仅占非常微小的比例，例如巴西橡胶树、桃花心木、可可树等。
